Hallway Wall Lights: Spacing, Height & Brightness Guide
Long corridors need thoughtful spacing and soft, even light. Use this guide to plan hallway sconces that feel welcoming, not overpowering.

Hallways are often under-lit, yet they set the first impression of your home. Wall sconces along a corridor create rhythm, guide movement, and eliminate the tunnel effect of a single ceiling fixture at each end.
Spacing
Space sconces roughly 240–300 cm (8–10 ft) apart in a standard-height corridor. In narrow hallways, closer spacing (200 cm) gives a more intimate glow. For long runs, alternate sides in a staggered pattern rather than placing every fixture on the same wall.
Height
Mount fixtures with the centre of the shade at about 170 cm (67 in) from the floor — slightly higher than bedroom sconces to clear door frames and sight lines.
Brightness
Hallways benefit from softer output. Look for frosted shades and warm-white bulbs (2700K–3000K). Dimmable options let you reduce brightness at night while keeping enough light for safe passage.
Style tips
- Narrow halls — Slim cylinder or vertical glass shades keep the corridor feeling open.
- High ceilings — Taller urn or globe shades fill vertical space without widening the fixture footprint.
- Gallery walls — Keep sconces above or below artwork, not competing with frames at eye level.
